Fungiphilia

Medium: Adobe INDESIGN // Role: Designer, PHOTOGRAPHER, writer

The Brief: “Fungiphilia” is a self-directed project as part of my MA in Visual Communication, Graphic design. This zine was an exploration and visual response to the world of fungi. I was similtaneously working with mycelium as a material for sculpture, and I wanted to explore functions of mark-making with mushroom caps, and create visual and graphic responses to passages of writing about the world of fungi.

“Fungiphilia” is a self-directed project that invites the viewer to see the fungi kingdom in a new way, though contemporary visual interpretations of words from experts exploring the intricate and integral role of fungi in our ecosystems, as well as passages dating back to the 1800s which help lend context to our complicated relationship with fungi.

Fungi are fascinating and feared, celebrated and cringed at. They are perhaps the most polarizing of nature’s seven biological kingdoms. It may seem that the world is having a bit of a “mushroom moment”, with mycological scientific revelations, technology innovations, and mushroom-related wellness trends permeating the main stream. But why has it seemingly taken centuries for a fungi-fad to catch on, when they serve so many crucial roles for both people and planet? And what is fungi anyway, if not just “toadstools”?
